"Streetscape in a New World" – International Competition of Urban Streetscape Design has been launched

(19 October 2007, Shanghai)New World China Land Limited (“NWCL” or “the Group”; Hong Kong stock code: 0917) has launched "Streetscape in a New World" – International Competition of Urban Streetscape Design at today’s press conference co-organized with the industry leading magazine, Architecture and Design. The competition will last for five months and the participants will submit their designs for the streetscape of either Chongweidajie, Chonwen District in Beijing or Huaihai Zhong Road in Shanghai. Entries will go through professional selection and public voting later on in the year and the winners will be awarded an architecture experience trip worth a total sum of RMB200,000. 

At the press conference, Mr Alex Pun Lap-fu, Deputy General Manager of NWCL said, “Streetscape is influential to people’s daily life. NWCL believes that a harmonious and eye pleasing community cannot be created without comprehensive and thoughtful design and articulation of public areas.” Mr Pun encouraged participants to create with innovation and open-mind, bringing inspiration to the future city development and lifestyle.    

Following the press conference, a forum on urban streetscape design was held.  Mr Wang Wei-qiang, full Professor in College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, and Deputy Director of Institute of Architecture and Urban Space, Tongji University; Mr Wong Chi-chung, EDAW Executive Director in China; Mr Yao Wang, Architects from Ehrenkrantz, Eckstut and Kuhn Architects and Mr Yang Xu, architect and artist shared their comments on urban streetscape design from different angles, including public space creation and city marketing; how urban design moldify city life; street and city and intangible public space. They also discussed the history and future of Chinese streetscape design, especially the interaction between business and various types of human activity.
