The co-organizer, New World China Land and Architecture and Design Magazine, have chosen the open air atrium of Shanghai Hong Kong New World Tower on Huaihai Road, Shanghai and the plaza outside Beijing New World Centre II Shopping Arcade in Chongwen District, Beijing as the exhibition venues.
Visitors to the exhibition could cast their vote for their favourite scheme, which will have a bearing towards the final score. Over 130 design schemes from a total of about 500 entries from 20 countries have been chosen by an expect panel to enter into the final round of competition in Beijing to be held on 25 March. Interestingly the designers are from many varied background such as city planning, engineering, architecture, website design and even mathematics, and besides professionals, many of them are overseas and local students.
Mr Alex Pun Lap-fu, Assistant General Manager of New World China Land and Shanghai Chief Executive, and Mr Wingo Chan Chi-wing, Beijing Deputy Regional Executive attended and opened the exhibition in Shanghai and Beijing respectively. “The streetscape of the city block is at the core in the quality of city life, all the schemes displayed their inventiveness and distinctive yet varied thinking in bringing about a brilliant solution to the existing streetscape challenge. Some schemes are particularly pragmatic in their approach and as such, opened our mind in our attempt to create a better city environment through our development project. They are also a good reference to the local city planners and anybody else who are interested in public space and its management”, said Mr Pun and Mr Chan in their opening speech.
With over 50 investment and development projects in 20 major cities all over Mainland China, New World China Land is committed in bringing about a good urban living and working environment. New World China Land realized that vibrant public space and street life is the key to a quality urban living experience for the local residents. This competition is an attempt to engage the public in the open discussion and exchange of idea in this interesting and personal issue.
